Things to do in Point Loma San Diego

Point Loma in San Diego is one of the area’s oldest communities, and it is visited more often by tourists than almost any other neighborhood in the region. There is good for reason for this, considering that it is host to some of the most enjoyable activities and adventures to be found anywhere in the San Diego area.

In point Loma, you’ll be able to enjoy spectacular views of San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean, you can easily observe the San Diego skyline, and you can find a whole slew of extremely popular sites and activities, as well as some lesser-known ones. Everyone in your family will find something that appeals to them, whether they prefer active adventures, or whether they would rather quietly discover the rich history and culture of the Point Loma area.

Check out the view at Sunset Cliffs

If you’re the type of person who loves to enjoy a good sunset, there are few places in this country which are more beautiful to witness than the sandstone cliffs near Point Loma. As the waves crash into shore and the sun dips closer to the horizon, you can enjoy a beautiful and relaxing sight along the oceanfront. Sunset Cliffs are situated on the western side of Point Loma Peninsula and just south of Ocean Beach. While there are a number of surfers who love this area, it’s not really a classic sandy beach for sunbathers, so while you’re enjoying the sunset from your vantage point on the cliffs, you won’t be bothered by a lot of background noise below.

Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach is situated at the northwest part of the Point Loma peninsula, and it’s much more laid back than Mission Beach, which is just a few miles to the north. Ocean Beach is far less commercialized than many other oceanfront communities, and residents take great pride in retaining their independence, as well as the quiet, simple nature of the community. If you’re looking for a wonderful oceanside experience without all the hoopla and noise of most popular tourist attractions, Ocean Beach is the place for you.

Point Loma Lighthouse

This lighthouse was constructed by the US government in 1855, and it sits 510 feet above sea level, which makes it the highest lighthouse anywhere to be found in the world. It was in operation until 1891, when it was replaced by a newer lighthouse which was closer to the shoreline. It has since been restored, and has become a major tourist attraction and a beloved landmark of the city, offering a gorgeous view of the ocean, as well as a panoramic view of San Diego itself.

Liberty Station area

Liberty Station was the original home of the San Diego Naval Training Center, and nowadays you’ll find that it’s a very lively section of the city which includes a number of houses, green spaces, supermarkets, restaurants, shopping opportunities, schools, breweries, and even a terrific public market. There is a wonderful art district at Liberty Station which is loaded with boutique shops, and there is also a weekend Swap Meet Market where both locals and visitors enjoy browsing and making purchases. When you’re ready to take a break and enjoy a great meal, you will be able to find many shops which feature fresh-made lobster rolls and empanadas, as well as some terrific fine dining opportunities.
