Liberty Station has a rich history in the San Diego area, and it’s one of the best communities in the greater Metro area for restaurants and the arts. That makes it a great place to visit, and while you’re there, you can enjoy a number of other terrific activities, either as a couple or with the whole family. Here are a few of the highlights of the Liberty Station area.

Taste of Liberty Station

On Wednesday, April 22, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, natives and visitors to Liberty Station can stroll through and explore all the offerings provided by Liberty Station businesses in 2020. Attendees will be able to sample bites of delicious foods prepared by vendors, while live music is being played, and artworks are displayed from a number of artists and galleries. Each attendee will be provided with a map that shows all participating businesses and whatever their special offering might be, and the map will provide a guide through the streets of the exhibit for the evening. This is a great way to sample all the delectable dishes provided by local restaurants, as well as a good way to acquaint yourself with the music and art of the community.

Naval Training Center

The Naval Training Center once housed as many as 25,000 recruits, but has now been shut down in Liberty Station. When it was operational, it hosted a number of Hollywood movies, for instance the Tom Cruise spectacular, Top Gun. There also used to be an old holding cell at the Naval Training Center where the entrance gate is now located, and you might still sense some of the ghosts from those former days. You can view this entire area, and you may recognize some of the locales from various movie scenes which you’ve seen in the past.

Liberty Public Market

On virtually every Sunday from 1 PM to 4 PM, live music will be performed at Liberty Public Market for the entertainment of locals and visitors. There is an outdoor patio at the marketplace, where you can enjoy terrific food, some outstanding drinks and cocktails, and some really good music from nationally-known artists as well as local artists. Best of all, there is no charge for this entertainment.

The Arts District

An entire section of Liberty Station has been designated as the Arts District, in deference to its numerous galleries, museums, art studios, and various other types of art installations. There is a beautiful elegant water fountain situated right in the middle of the Arts District, and all the surrounding facilities provide just as much appeal to the art lover. Here you’ll also find a recreational Music Center, as well as the Dorothy Laub Dance Place, where a number of prestigious dance companies are often in residence.

Prime San Diego location

Because of its prime location within the metropolitan San Diego area, Liberty Station is situated very close to Old Town San Diego, where you can learn about the origins and founding of this great city. You’ll also be able to visit Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, the Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego Harbor, and Point Loma, which is a very popular tourist attraction for surfers and beach lovers. Liberty Station is a big, sprawling community with lots of parking, and lots of room for visitors to spread out and discover the city.
