The community is bordered by Interstate 805 to the west, State Route 15 on the eastern side, Interstate 8 to the north, and on the south, it is bordered by El Cajon Boulevard. Normal Heights is often considered to be the best reflection of the ethnic diversity which typifies the city of San Diego, because it has a median age of 31, and the breakdown of ethnic groups within the community is 9% Asian American, 13% African-American, 25% Hispanic, and 53% Caucasian. These percentages follow the overall composition of the city quite nicely, and are an accurate reflection of the ethnic diversity to be found in San Diego.

This is a highly pedestrian community, similar to most urban mesa neighborhoods, and that means on any given day, you’re likely to see throngs of villagers walking about the community, on their way to work, play, and exercise. Antique lovers will really enjoy a stretch of commercial area which runs from Adams Avenue between Texas Street and Ohio Street, and which has been dubbed ‘Antique Row’ because of its numerous antique shops.

Community events

Visitors to the area are charmed by some of the annual events staged by the community, including the Adams Avenue Street Fair, which is one of the largest music festivals in all of Southern California. Visitors also enjoy the Adams Avenue Unplugged festival, and the Art Around Adams art event in which talented artists showcase their skills and their talent on the streets and in the shops along Adams Avenue.

Families with children can have youngsters educated at one of three public elementary schools which are operated by the San Diego Unified School District, as well as the St. Didacus Catholic school. Some of the popular restaurants in the area include the Canada Steak Burger, Filiberto’s Mexican Food, Ponce’s Mexican, the Blind Lady Ale House, the El Salvador Pupuseria y Restaurante, or the Dark Horse Coffee Roasters.

When community members wish to get in some exercise, they go to the Park de la Cruz in the southern part of the community, Teralta Park on the eastern edge of the neighborhood, Ward Canyon Neighborhood Park in the middle of the neighborhood, or Normal Heights Open Space Park in the north, where there are numerous opportunities to take a relaxing stroll, enjoy the sunshine, and let your cares drift away.

Transportation around the entire region is made easy by the close proximity of the Escondido Freeway on the eastern edge of the community, and Interstate 805 on the western edge. The most popular east-west running road in the region is Adams Avenue, home to numerous shops, bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
