Kearny Mesa is another of the residential communities which make up Central San Diego, and in this case, it’s a community which has a population close to 3,000 individuals. The community is named after a military base named Camp Kearny which operated between 1917 and 1946, before eventually being converted into a Marine Corps air station named Miramar. Miramar is still in operation today, and it provides employment opportunities to local residents, as well as the military personnel who are stationed there.
Where is Kearny Mesa?
The community is bounded to the north by State Route 52, to the west by Interstate 805, on the south by Aeor Drive, and to the east by interstate Route 15. Some of the nearby communities include Clairemont, Tierrasanta, and Serra Mesa. As you might think, the area around Kearny Mesa is fairly flat, and that makes it ideal for hosting the local municipal airport called Montgomery Field.
There are several individual developments for residents which comprise the total community, the most prominent of which are Kearny Lodge, Stonecrest, and Royal Highlands. The economy of the area is primarily commercial and industrial, with local businesses consisting of a mix of American and Asian restaurants, auto sales, national chain stores, supermarkets, and a number of small businesses.
One of the biggest commercial areas in the community centers around Convoy Street, where there are a number of different Asian cultures represented such as Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai. With these diverse Asian cultures having such a presence, it’s very common to see Asian eating establishments such as the Emerald Chinese Restaurant which offer superb Oriental fare.
Here you’ll also find the Shanghai Saloon, the Dumpling Inn, the Rakiraki Ramen Restaurant, and the Tajima Japanese restaurant, all providing tasty Asian food to appreciative patrons. There are also a number of terrific areas for outdoor activity where both locals and visitors to the area can enjoy some good exercise. One of these is the Kearny Mesa Recreation Center, which provides a well-equipped playground for children, and a huge open field which is ideal for football and soccer.
On the warmer days of summer, you’ll be able to take a dip in the pool there and cool off before getting in some sunbathing to enjoy a thoroughly relaxing summer day. If you’re up for a short road trip, you can visit the nearby Sea World or Mission Bay, both of which are just minutes away from the area, and which provide all kinds of attractions and activities for the whole family.
If you want to get some exercise for your pet, you can take a nice long stroll at the Kerny Mesa Dog Park, where you will undoubtedly run into like-minded residents who are strolling through the area with their pets.
