As you might expect from its name, the region known as College Area in San Diego is a college town that is home to San Diego State University, formerly known as San Diego State College. College Area is just a short drive away some of the best-known attractions in all of San Diego, for instance, Sea World, Balboa Park, Belmont Park, and the world-class San Diego Zoo. It’s also home to some of the area’s best sporting events and concerts, many of which are staged at Viejas Arena.
Exercise enthusiasts will love the fact that the area has such wonderful facilities as Chollas Lake Park, where you can take a beautiful walk and enjoy the wonders of nature, or jog along one of the many trails throughout the park. Most of the trails are shaded and run alongside a reservoir, and there is also a pier in which fishermen can cast their lures, and try their luck at landing the big one.
You’ll also find a well-equipped playground here so that youngsters can enjoy themselves in a good, safe setting while older members of the family are otherwise occupied. Another great area for hiking in the Mission Trails Regional Park which is just a short drive away from the College Area, and provides more than 60 miles of mountain bike trails as well as hiking opportunities.
Community Restaurants & More
When you’re ready for a great meal, you can check out such area restaurants as Tokyo Sushi, Eureka Restaurant, and the Alfaron Mediterranean Restaurant. The college area is actually situated in the mid-city area of San Diego and is dominated by San Diego State University and all of its student attendees who bring a wealth of diversity to the region.
A number of neighborhoods in this community were actually developed way back in the 1930s, and these were added onto after the second world war. The region is bordered on the east by the city of La Mesa, and on the west by Kensington and Talmadge. One of the busiest shopping districts in the community is centered around El Cajon Boulevard, and there’s a great deal of additional development currently underway right near the University itself.
Some of the neighborhoods which are taken into the overall College Area include Dennstedt Point, East Falls View Drive, Saranac-Mohawk, the Catoctin Area, and an interesting Orthodox Jewish neighborhood that is situated close by the Congregation Beth Jacob Orthodox Synagogue that can be found on College Avenue. Medical facilities in the area include the Alvarado Hospital, which offers 306 beds to area residents when medical care is needed. There is also a major branch of the San Diego Public Library within the community, which is the College Rolando Branch. Because the College Area is situated on a plateau that overlooks Interstate 8, it offers some remarkable views of the entire region. Transportation throughout the area includes the Metropolitan Transit System, which operates a very convenient trolley between the San Diego State University Transit Center and the Alvarado Medical Center Station.
